Score Residual Gauge
An inexpensive & accurate solution for the Easy Open Score Residual measurements. Now with PerfectFocusTM - automatic focus on the score groove with laser!
The score is an essential part of the easy open system. A badly made score groove will require significantly more pressure to open than a properly made one. The key measurement for this purpose is the score residual. This is the distance between the bottom of the end and the bottom of the score groove. This value is typically around 30% of the total end thickness.
There are several techniques in measuring this value (e.g., pop & tear). However, these will only indicate that there might be a problem, while not specifying where that problem might be located. In addition, pop & tear methods are crude and destructive for the measured ends.
A problem in the opening could be due to problems in the rivet, the pull tab, or in a specific area of the score groove. As the score depth varies across the diameter of the end (with the deepest point usually being next to the pull tab) a problematic depth at one or more points could introduce a problem into the entire end.
Until today, competing systems which utilize depth-of-field microscopes, depended on skilled operators who manually focus on the score groove utilizing an external video monitor and built-in micrometer. The high reliance on operators produces a lower GR&R rating, as different operators will focus on different parts of the groove. An informal test conducted by our customers indicates that the repeatability of such systems is approximately 5-7 microns!
Such systems are usually quite expensive, as they require an external video screen, a high cost indicator and decoder. Such systems usually provide their SPC through an additional computer system and software that increase the costs even more. Our approach is to utilize our expertise in optics and laser technologies to dramatically improve repeatability regardless of who is operating the system. Our integrated system is significantly lower in price than other available systems, and it can produce a repeatability of 2 microns! The system is less expensive and simpler to maintain because we do not require any additional peripherals (e.g., decoders or external monitors). The microscope is directly connected to the computer with a USB cable!
New: The score residual gauge is now able to perform non-destructive score groove profiling at no additional cost!
Key benefits
- High repeatability (15% or better) and resolution (+/-1 micron)
- Results do not rely on operators - different operators will get the same result
